What Causes Shaving Irritation

Ingrown Hairs

When you shave or wax, hair is removed or cut. But, when this hair grows back, there are chances for it to grow into the hair follicle itself, especially if you have curly hair. While it is mostly men who suffer from ingrown hairs, women aren't entirely spared either.

While men usually suffer from ingrown hairs on skin under their beards, neck and scalps, women suffer from ingrown hair on their legs, bikini lines and underarms.

Ingrown Hair after electrolysis

While electrolysis is a very effective long-term hair removal procedure, it isn't perfect by any means. People often complain of ingrown hairs shortly after an electrolysis procedure, while also complaining of intense redness that immediately follows the procedure.

Razor Bumps

50% to 80% of African-American men and 20% of Cauca- sian men suffer from razor bumps. Asian, Latino and men from other ethnicities are also subject to razor bumps, though at lower levels of incidence. Razor bumps are similar to ingrown hairs, except that the hair that grows back doesn't grow into its own hair follicle but grows back into the skin, after penetrating it.

Over time, if left untreated, razor bumps can worsen, get infected and make shaving very painful or near impossible.

Razor Burn

Whether it is shaving, waxing, laser removal or hair remov- al facilitated by electrolysis, you must understand that it is a rather traumatic process for your skin, as a sharp blade or other device cuts or yanks out hair growing through your skin. It almost always causes inflammation that shows up in the form of redness. Some people are more prone to razor burn than others.

Ingrown Hair after
Waxing

While waxing is generally very efficient, improperly performed waxing can prevent complete hair removal, resulting in ingrown hairs when the hair begins to grow back. Waxing is also generally painful and leaves redness or a burning sensation for a few hours after the procedure.
